Tonight, the Chicago Blackhawks will have an opportunity to do something the Bruins failed to accomplish in four attempts. End the Flyers’ season. With a 7-4 thumping of the Flyers at the United Center in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals Sunday, Chicago grabbed a 3-2 lead to set up tonight’s Game 6. One more win, and the Blackhawks will capture their first Cup since 1961. But as another Original Six team learned in most painful fashion, it’s not so easy to deliver the final boot to the Flyers.

The Philadelphia Flyers have to be feeling pretty good about their play going into Game 5. They have been physical, smart and opportunistic. The Flyers look like a team that wants the Stanley Cup more than the Chicago Blackhawks. Mike Richards and Jeff Carter (empty net) both scored for the Flyers who have been depending on secondary scoring so far in the playoffs. The Chicago Blackhawks got out worked, out hustled and lost puck battles for 45 minutes on Friday night but woke up with a spirited 15 minutes that almost won them the game.

The fans at Wachovia Center will be treated to a game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Philadelphia Flyerswhen they take their seats on Friday. Claude Giroux scored at 5:59 of overtime in Game 3 on Wednesday as the Flyers defeated the Blackhawks4-3 to cut the Stanley Cup final deficit to 2-1. Danny Briere, Scott Hartnell, and Ville Leino added the other goals for the Flyers. Duncan Keith, Brent Sopel, and Patrick Kane tallied for the Blackhawks.

The Flyers have all kinds of reasons to be nervous going into Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals Wednesday in Philadelphia, & all kinds of reasons to be confident. They lost the first 2 games of the series to the Chicago Blackhawks, but narrowly & on the road. Both recent history & distant history suggest that the Flyers can readily climb back or that the Blackhawks could let their 2-0 lead slip through their fingers.

Tonight at 8 PM EST, the Flyers and Blackhawks meet again for Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals. If Chicago wins tonight they take a commanding 2-0 lead on the series as it heads back to Philly. As many of us know, a 2-0 hole is not insurmountable, especially upon returning to home ice. The Flyers, of all teams, should know that more than any other. But a 2-0 hole against Chicago is not a position you want to be in, home ice or not. Neither team’s defense or goaltending has really shone through just yet. Either way, here’s to another exciting game to watch.

As for the Flyers, their inclusion in the Stanley Cup Finals came in spite of a coaching change, numerous injuries & with the benefit of hard work, fighting through adversity & a little thing called lady luck. Chicago enters the Stanley Cup Finals as the prohibitive favorites with a roster that features some of the most exciting players in the game, mainly, Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith & Brent Seabrook. The Flyers, while offset with plenty of veteran players, boast their own impressive group of youngsters in the form of Mike Richards, Jeff Carter & ever improving Claude Giroux.

If the Philadelphia Flyers, up 3-1 in the best-of-seven series, defeat the Montreal Canadiens Monday (7, Versus), they would advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1997. The Flyers haven’t won the Stanley Cup since 1975.

The Chicago Blackhawks moved one win away from a spot in the Stanley Cup finals, getting an overtime goal from Dustin Byfuglien to win 3-2 against the San Jose Sharks & open a 3-0 lead in their playoff series. Byfuglien scored 12:24 into overtime & Antti Niemi stopped 44 shots last night at the United Center in Chicago. The Blackhawks can finish off the best-of-7 National Hockey League Western Conference finals at home today. Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals is today in Montreal, with the Canadiens trailing 2-1 in the series against the Flyers.

The Canadiens will likely use the same mentality Saturday, when they hope to turn the Eastern Conference Finals into a best-of-three. Receiving offensive contributions from players such as Pyatt and Dominic Moore — who also scored in Game 3 — helps relieve pressure from the likes of Michael Cammalleri and Brian Gionta, who have taken on much of that burden in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. All signs point toward the return of Ian Laperriere to the Flyers’ lineup for Game 4 on Saturday afternoon.

The San Jose Sharks and the Chicago Blackhawks will both be trying to pick up a win on Friday when they battle at United Center. Jonathan Toews had a goal and an assist to lead the Blackhawks over the Sharks 4-2 in Game 2 of the Western Conference final on Tuesday night. Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith put up two helpers apiece for the Blackhawks, who now lead the best-of-seven series 2-0. Patrick Marleau scored twice for San Jose, while Dan Boyle assisted on both markers for San Jose.
